Support the “Educating for Democracy Act”
An appreciation for our local, state, and National history starts in our schools. Familiarity with facts and exposure to compelling stories that illustrate the depth and diversity of our past must be an essential part of the education process. Our K-12 students need inspired teachers and engaging programs to understand the vital role history plays in our lives and to critically evaluate the appropriation of history for political purposes.
A bi-partisan bill that would dramatically increase Federal support for history and civics education will be considered by the Senate in January. This legislation would authorize $1billion in spending each year over the next five years to establish grant programs for state and local education agencies. This includes funding for teacher professional development to strengthen and improve their approach to civic and history education and grants for non-profit entities to develop and expand access to evidence-based curricula.
The Educating for Democracy Act acknowledges the critical importance of history education In American society today and ensures that future generations will be better equipped to appreciate their past.
