Alexander House, an 1811 Federal/Greek Revival-style house protected in Historic New England’s Preservation Easement Program, is for sale in Springfield, Massachusetts. Situated on 0.4 acres, this elegant home enjoys proximity to many cultural institutions and contains flexible professional office and living spaces.
Designed by the renowned housewright and architect Asher Benjamin for James Byers, Jr., a prominent social and political figure, the house is located in the Quadrangle-Mattoon Street Historic District. In 1857 Henry Alexander, Jr., an industrialist, venture capitalist, and mayor, purchased the property and transformed the house into a social center for Springfield’s business and political elite.
The easement protects all exterior elevations of the main house and ell, as well as chimneys, foundation, and roof profiles. Interior protection includes space configuration of all rooms and the structural framing, as well as plaster, woodwork, floors, and fireplaces and hearths. The goal of the restriction is to preserve historically important features while allowing the premises to be updated to meet the needs of modern living and to be enjoyed by its owners. Historic New England will work closely with all future owners to ensure that alterations are done in a sensitive and reversible manner.
The house is part of Historic New England’s Preservation Easement Program, a national model for saving privately owned historic homes.
