“Watch This Space: Expressions of Queer Ecology by Maine College of Art & Design Alumni” at Jewett House | Historic New England

May 20, 2022

Painting by Mai Snow. Listening Mouth in Field, 2022

The exhibition is a collaboration between Historic New England and Maine College of Art & Design. It features the work of six Maine College of Art & Design alumni, including Kyle Hardy, Lindsay Mercer, olivier, Mai Snow, Benjamin Spalding, and Shel Stefan.

The juried exhibition artists explore themes of queer ecology, from questioning the human versus nature paradigm to celebrating the beauty of transgenderism, with works in painting, mixed media sculpture, and video.

“In Watch This Space, we are looking at the human-nature relationship through a different lens. Can we shift our thinking from being above and apart from nature to being part of it?” said Historic New England South Berwick Site Manager Marilyn Keith Daly.

Watch This Space is on view at Sarah Orne Jewett House Museum and Visitor Center from June 3 to October 30, 2022. The property is open from Friday to Sunday, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The exhibition is free and open to the public.
