PUBLICK OCCURRENCES — April 10, 2024
History is for Everyone
This June, join us at the 2024 Massachusetts History Conference for sessions that give you the tools to engage students with your archives while making them more accessible online.
In “Youth Archivists for Social Change,” Penni Martorell of Wistariahurst Museum, Naomi Robles of Holyoke Public Schools, and UMass Amherst Ph.D. student Dana Altshuler will discuss their 2023 program that brought six young people from the Holyoke Public Schools to engage in hands-on archival work on the founding documents of the Holyoke Ethnic Studies Program. The presentation will provide a road map for creating a similar hands-on learning experience in your community.
In “Facilitating Access to Archives with MA-SHRAB,” Elizabeth O’Connell and Yolande Bennett of the Massachusetts State Historical Records Advisory Board (SHRAB) will help demystify digital collections. They will discuss selecting collections to be digitized, best practices for digitization, methods and use for metadata creation, and tools for curating digital collections and exhibitions. This introductory session for new and intermediate users of digital collections is ideal for institutions who are just embarking on their digital journey and those who wish to learn how to make the most out of the digitized files they already have.
Conference registration opens April 16th. We hope to see you there!
