SMU DataArts’ Arts Vibrancy map for 2025. Ranked by Per Capita Supply, Demand, and Government Support for the Arts

Last week, SMU DataArts, the National Center for Arts Research, released its 10th annual Arts Vibrancy Index, a decade-long snapshot of how arts and culture is valued, growing, and thriving across the United States.

Their Arts Vibrancy Index measures arts supply, demand, and public support for arts and culture, with adjustments for population and cost of living.

And while the results may not surprise anyone familiar with the region’s creative density, they are still worth celebrating: the Northeast continues to lead the nation in arts vibrancy. This year, the top four states are New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.

Massachusetts ranks as the fourth most arts-vibrant state in the country, slipping one position from 2024 as our neighbor to the south, Connecticut, moved into the #3 spot. According to SMU DataArts, Connecticut’s dramatic rise – climbing from #21 in 2024 to #3 in 2025 – reflects a combination of expanded data availability from multiple sources and measurable growth within key parts of the state’s arts ecosystem.

Beyond statewide rankings, the Index also highlights arts-vibrant communities, capturing changes in arts activity, participation, funding, access, and employment at the local level. One of the most compelling findings: arts vibrancy is not confined to a single region or type of place. Highly arts-vibrant communities are dispersed across the country: urban and rural, large and small.

Here in the Commonwealth, the results underscore the breadth of our cultural landscape. Massachusetts is home to six of the 100 Most Arts-Vibrant Communities in the nation, spanning both eastern and western Massachusetts:

  • Boston (#9)
  • Nantucket (#10)
  • Pittsfield (#11)
  • Amherst/Northampton (#33)
  • Cambridge/Newton/Framingham (#40)
  • Vineyard Haven (#55)

Longevity matters, too. Of the 17 communities nationwide that have appeared in the Arts Vibrancy Index every year since its inception, three are in Massachusetts – demonstrating sustained commitment to arts and culture regardless of economic cycles or current events:

  • Boston
  • Pittsfield
  • Cambridge/Newton/Framingham

An additional 22 communities have appeared in the Index at least three times since 2020, signaling continued cultural vitality in the post-COVID period. One of those communities is Vineyard Haven, on Martha’s Vineyard.

These arts vibrancy rankings matter because they help:

  • Policymakers identify opportunities to strengthen cultural infrastructure.
  • Cultural organizations understand their competitive landscape and advocate for resources.
  • Communities benchmark progress and learn from peers.
  • Researchers and funders track long-term trends in arts ecosystem development.

Mass Cultural Council is proud to serve as the state agency charged with supporting and strengthening the Commonwealth’s ever-vibrant, creative, and diverse cultural sector. Data like this informs our work – guiding policy discussions and programmatic decisions as we continue investing in the arts and culture that make Massachusetts such a dynamic place to live, work, and create.
