Digital Commonwealth is the statewide digitization hub for Massachusetts and works with institutions to preserve their cultural heritage. Digital Commonwealth’s (DC) mission is to provide resources and services to support the creation, management, and dissemination of cultural heritage materials held by Massachusetts (MA) libraries, museums, historical societies, archives, and other similar institutions. DC is a nonprofit organization founded in 2006 as the education and outreach component of the Boston Public Library’s (BPL) Digital Partners Group. We currently have over 200 member institutions, and provide researchers, students, and the general public a single online point of access to members’ digital collections. The online repository now contains almost one million images, documents, and sound recordings. As MA’s network hub to the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA), our repository is merged into the DPLA collection 3-4 times per year, as part of their national effort to “collect the riches of America’s libraries, archives, and museums”. We support the BPL’s charter to digitize and host cultural material, by conducting outreach on the repository collections, supporting researchers and educators in utilizing these collections, and developing and providing complementary programming. Digitization services are provided by the Boston Public Library’s Digital Partners team at no cost, with funding from the Library for the Commonwealth program (State budget LINE ITEM 7000-9401).
