Originally built as District School #11 for the Town of Groton, Sandy Pond Schoolhouse is one of only two extant single room schoolhouses in the former Groton township. It became part of the Ayer school system in 1871 when Ayer separated from Groton. Closed as a school in 1906, it was acquired by the newly founded Sandy Pond School Association in 1908. The mission of the Sandy Pond School Association is to preserve and interpret the history of the historic Sandy Pond Schoolhouse, Ayer’s oldest public building and a National Historic Register property. We are currently in the process of restoring this iconic property and developing new programs for the public and elementary school students.
